As promised a year ago, I want to introduce each of the guest rooms as I renovate and redecorate them. It is time to present the Quilt Room. This room is a large room in the northeast corner of the house. It is in a part of the house that juts out from the main house so that there are windows on three walls of the room, making it bright and cheery.
The Quilt Room is a special gem. It has a private balcony that overlooks a gazebo and the neighboring church. Enjoy the quite and solitude of the country with a glass of wine on the balcony before going inside for a restful nights sleep.
I painted the room a pale green with red and burgundy accents in the love seat and the curtains. The colors came from the authentic Amish quilt on the bed that I purchased at the Gordonville Mud Sale earlier in the year (if you haven’t been to a mud sale, you are surely missing out!!). The California King bed features my pride and joy in furniture refinishing and upholstery: my antique headboard repurposed from an over-mantle (the fixture in mansions that sat above a fireplace mantle and usually had a mirror and shelves, adding a huge touch of character that spoke volumes about the wealth and workmanship that went into the home). Mine just so happens to be the perfect size for a head board. Its Victorian charm adds to the eclectic theme of the farm-house chic style that I am adding to the B&B.
When the house was converted to a B&B, the small closet in the room was expanded into a powder room. But for showering, guests have exclusive use of the original bathroom just outside of their room in the hall. This large bathroom is newly remodeled with a large walk in shower and modern vanity and floors, but maintains the charm of the original 100 year old floral tiles and original medicine cabinet. The shower features a medallion and niche shelf that highlight the beauty of the original tiles.
For those of you keeping score, this large sunny room features a private balcony, king bed, and a bath and a half. Check out next month’s blog about the “spare room”. It is a great add on to the Quilt Room with two twin beds and shared use of the hall bathroom. It is perfect for those times when you are traveling with a friend.
