Even busy Innkeepers take time off. A break in the routine of preparing meals, cleaning rooms, washing and drying laundry and other duties is valuable and needed but we missed the times when we meet guests new to the B&B experience and the much cherished time after the breakfast meal when we sit with our guests and talk about their days or what they have planned for themselves.
Sarah and I took three days and visited Charlottesville VA to spend time at the homes of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, great men and founders of our beloved United States of America. We stayed at the Dinsmore House B&B in the center of Charlottesville and across the street from the University of Virginia. Every B&B is distinct and unique in it’s decoration, number of rooms, amenities and breakfast service. For an Innkeeper, it is a chance to experience how another Innkeeper approaches servicing their guests. The Dinsmore was great. Comfort, breakfasts, amenities and attention to guests was what would be expected at a quality B&B.
Our first day was spent at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home. The 4 hours spent on the house tour, garden tour and just wandering around were full of the History of our founding father. The love and dedication he gave to this newly formed Country were evident in the energy and knowledge of the guides who walked us through his life. Nothing was left to question; details of the life of the slaves, Jefferson’s wrestling with the “…all men are created equal…”, his wife and his abiding belief in the rational and humanist side of man.
The second day was the 30 mile trip to Montpelier, home of James Madison. The expansive farm borders the road to the house that has seen many alterations and is finally being restored to the time of Madison. Again we found knowledgeable tour guides and time for a self-tour of the basement and garden. Both of these great men loved to plant and harvest. Madison was instrumental in the writing of our Constitution. More than we knew, Madison worked tirelessly to keep the spirit of the Constitution real and alive. After 2 days of History, we have now a deeper appreciation of the strength and foresight of these two great statesmen.
One of the many benefits for a small business owner is the option to plan time for a getaway. It does not only rejuvenate the body and refresh the mind but when visiting another Bed and Breakfast, we have a chance to actually experience what our guests feel. The Walnut Lawn Bed and Breakfast will only become better through these getaways.
