6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Wake up, clean up from a night’s sleep. Prepare for the day’s breakfast, make coffee, set the morning table, put out the early bird coffee for the guests, place the morning juice, and fruit appetizer. When we have time, we visit our guests who come down for early coffee.
8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. We greet and introduce guests and then they seat for a family style breakfast. After a short Thanksgiving; coffee or tea are served to the guests as they begin the breakfast. Conversations are stimulated about where the guests ate their dinner the previous night and places they have visited. The main course is presented and the guests enjoy passing the egg, meat and starch portions around the table. We take the time to explain the different dishes and then take leave for the guests to enjoy their breakfast. We return to the kitchen to prepare the last course and begin clean up.
9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. We return to converse with our guests. When the guests are finished their meal, plates are collected and the desert is served with more coffee or tea. Most of the time is spent in interesting and informative conversations with our guests. We talk about their day of excursions, theater, restaurants, family and any other topic they find interesting. We help them plan interesting things to do and places to go during the day.
10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Our guests either prepare for their day in the County or leave us. We clean-up the dishes and say our farewells to our guests leaving us.
11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We begin the preparing of the guests rooms; changing linens, towels, cleaning the bathrooms, beginning washes. A phone call for a reservation may interrupt our work schedule but when there are two of us, the work load shifts easily for one to the other.
12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The wash goes into the dryers, enjoy a little lunch, the menu for the next day is prepared, laundry is folded and what is needed to be ironed, ironed. The books are brought up-to-date, phone calls are answered and food is started for the next day’s breakfast. On some days we go shopping for groceries, visit friends, make appointments, do yard work.
4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We are ready to greet any new guests to our B&B. Whatever work needs to be finished is completed. A healthy evening meal is enjoyed and a game of Yahtzee begins an evening together. There are always time to call family and friends to catch up on what’s happing with them. Calls may come in for a reservation or from those pesky salespersons.
8:00 p.m. to Bedtime: It’s time to relax and look forward to another day. Each day at the Walnut Lawn Bed and Breakfast is like a Holiday and every meal is like a Feast.
The routine and rhythms of the Walnut Lawn Bed and Breakfast owners vary over the course of a year. In our slow season, we spend time on maintenance, improvements and just enjoying each other. In our busy months, it’s like a ride on a roller coaster, the pace and work increases and the best times are when we can sit and talk to our guests on the porch or in our common rooms.
